Human awareness of the universe is extremely recent. For most of cosmic history, no one on Earth was capable of noticing anything beyond the nearest stars. This framework reframes humanity’s position in the universe. If the most difficult barrier is already behind us, then our existence may be exceptionally rare. If the most difficult barrier lies ahead, then the period of rapid technological growth becomes the most vulnerable chapter in a civilization’s history. Garrett also considers the implications if artificial intelligence surpasses human cognitive limits and begins improving itself without effective oversight. “Upon reaching a technological singularity, ASI systems will quickly surpass biological intelligence and evolve at a pace that completely outstrips traditional oversight mechanisms,” he writes. At that point, alignment becomes uncertain. Biological life requires resources, stability, and space. An intelligence optimized for efficiency may not prioritize those needs and could view them as obstacles.
The concern is not any single outcome, but the loss of meaningful human control. Garrett notes that such systems could eliminate their parent civilization in many ways, including “engineering and releasing a highly infectious and fatal virus into the environment.” In this view, artificial intelligence becomes a civilizational threshold, accelerating power and decision making faster than ethical, social, and governance systems have historically been able to adapt.
