On June 7, 2016, Colin Scott, a 23-year-old recent university graduate, and his sister, Sable, made a purposeful choice in Yellowstone National Park. They walked about 225 yards away from the official boardwalk in the Norris Geyser Basin, entering a restricted area known to be highly unstable. According to Deputy Chief Ranger Lorant Veress, they planned to find a thermal pool to soak in—an illegal and extremely dangerous activity called “hot potting.” This wasn’t an accidental slip from a safe path but a planned search for a “wild” experience. As Sable recorded with her cellphone, Colin knelt at the edge of a bubbling spring to test its temperature. He slipped on the loose ground and fell into the boiling, acidic water.

The Grim Discovery and the Vanishing

Sable Scott’s immediate efforts to rescue her brother failed. The remote, unstable location, combined with a lack of cellphone service, made the situation even more helpless. Given the immediate and severe nature of the fall, any rescue was already impossible. She had to run to a nearby museum to find help, losing precious minutes. When park rangers arrived, they were met with the terrible power of the spring. They could see Colin’s remains floating in the 10-foot-deep pool. An official report noted his head, upper torso, and hands were visible, with one ranger observing “what appeared to be a cross… resting on the subject’s face,” a sad and haunting detail. It was clear he was deceased from the severe burns.

An immediate recovery was impossible. The decision was made because of extreme, overlapping dangers. The ground in the Norris Geyser Basin is famously treacherous, often just a thin, brittle crust of minerals over more boiling water. This “false ground” is weak because the acid in the water keeps it from hardening.

Any rescue attempt would put the team at high risk of breaking through the crust themselves. To make matters worse, a severe lightning storm quickly moved in. A high-altitude, open, and wet area like this, filled with minerals that conduct electricity, is an extremely dangerous place to be in a storm. The team had to stop their efforts until the next morning, June 8.

When they returned, they faced a shocking sight: the body was gone. The churning, acidic water had worked with horrifying speed. The only evidence that a person had been there less than 24 hours before was a wallet and a pair of flip-flops. These man-made materials were resistant to the chemical and heat attack that had destroyed the organic matter and bone.

Norris Basin’s Lethal Chemistry

The complete disappearance of a human body in less than a day wasn’t a mystery. It was a quick and brutal result of extreme chemistry and physics. The Norris Geyser Basin is known for being Yellowstone’s oldest, hottest, and most active thermal area. Home to Steamboat Geyser (the world’s tallest active geyser), its unstable nature is a direct result of where it’s located: at the meeting point of three major fault lines. These faults act as a “superhighway” for heat and volcanic gases to travel from the magma chamber deep underground.

This geological setup makes Norris different from most other geyser basins in the park: its water is mostly acidic. While areas like the Old Faithful basin have alkaline (non-acidic) water, the features at Norris are different. This acid system actively eats away at the surrounding volcanic rock, creating a landscape of bubbling mud and “rotten,” unstable ground—which explains the “loose surface” Colin Scott slipped on.

The water in that pool was measured at 212°F (100°C), meaning it was actively boiling. This extreme heat was combined with high acidity. The water’s high acidity (also known as low pH) is mainly caused by hydrogen sulfide gas rising from the magma. When this gas mixes with water and oxygen near the surface, a strange and deadly natural process happens: tiny organisms called thermoacidophilic microbes, which thrive in these exact hot and acidic conditions, feed on the gas. As they feed, they turn the gas into sulfuric acid. This makes the water as acidic as stomach acid, and some pools can be as corrosive as battery acid.

This harsh environment launched a two-stage attack on the body. The first stage was heat. Falling into boiling water causes immediate and severe third-degree burns over the entire body. This heat breaks down the body’s complex proteins (like collagen) and melts its fats. The violent bubbling of the spring also added a physical stirring effect, which sped up the entire process. This heat damage effectively “cooked” and broke apart the body’s soft tissues, making them vulnerable to the second attack.

The second stage was chemical. The strong sulfuric acid in the bubbling water then chemically broke down the already damaged tissues. Most importantly, the acid dissolved the minerals in the bones, the very calcium phosphate that makes bone hard and strong. Once the hard part of the bone was gone, the remaining soft parts were easily destroyed by the heat and acid. The combination of the churning boil (acting as a natural stirrer) and the powerful acid created an efficient way to break down the body very quickly. As Deputy Chief Ranger Veress said, “In a very short order, there was a significant amount of dissolving.”

A Perilous History: The Dangers of “Hot Potting”

Colin Scott’s death, while shocking in its result, is part of a long, sad history of accidents in Yellowstone’s thermal areas. The illegal practice of “hot potting” continues to happen, often driven by a desire for a “secret” experience, sometimes encouraged by social media. The park’s rules aren’t made for no reason; they exist because the ground is often just a thin, breakable crust over boiling water. This crust can be paper-thin and give way without warning, plunging a person into the scalding water below. The water temperatures themselves are also deadly and unpredictable. A pool that looks inviting can suddenly surge to scalding temperatures from unseen changes in the park’s underground plumbing.

There is a major misunderstanding when it comes to this danger. People are naturally more afraid of an active threat, like a bear, than a “passive” one, like a hot spring. This is a critical mistake in judging risk. A bear is a visible “agent” that moves and makes choices, which our brains are wired to see as a direct threat.

A hot spring is a “condition” of the environment; it is static and seemingly passive, making it easier to underestimate. Yet, statistics show that since 1890, Yellowstone’s hot springs have killed at least 22 people. This is far more than the eight deaths caused by grizzly bears in the same period. The ground itself, not the wildlife, is the park’s most consistently lethal feature.

This long history includes both deliberate rule-breaking and tragic accidents. In 1970, nine-year-old Andy Hecht died after slipping from a boardwalk into the Crested Pool. In 1981, 24-year-old David Kirwan died from 100% third-degree burns after he dived into the 202°F Celestine Pool in a futile attempt to rescue a friend’s dog. In 2000, 20-year-old Sara Hulphers died after she and two friends fell into Cavern Spring at night, mistaking it for a stream; her companions were severely injured. More recently, in 2022, a man’s foot, still in a shoe, was found in Abyss Pool after he fell in. Finding parts of a body is a more common, though still grim, result. The fact that Colin Scott’s disappearance was so complete is what makes his case a particularly extreme and terrifying example of the springs’ power.

Nature as an Impersonal Force

The boardwalks and warning signs in Yellowstone represent more than simple regulations. They are a line of respect, marking a critical boundary between the managed human world and an active, primal force. The tragedy at Norris Geyser Basin occurred because of a common, fatal error: mistaking an impersonal, powerful system for a passive backdrop to human adventure.

These geothermal features are direct, uncaring expressions of the planet’s internal energy. To seek a “wild” experience by stepping off the path was to fundamentally miscalculate that power. It is a raw condition of the landscape, not a character that can be reasoned with. This event shows that the true boundaries in Yellowstone are not the wooden planks, but the unbending laws of physics and chemistry.
