The suit alleges that ChatGPT not only failed to respond appropriately to Adam’s suicidal ideation but “actively helped Adam explore suicide methods.”

“Despite acknowledging Adam’s suicide attempt and his statement that he would ‘do it one of these days,’ ChatGPT neither terminated the session nor initiated any emergency protocol,” the complaint states.

The chat logs submitted with the lawsuit document a disturbing evolution. In one exchange, Adam expressed fear that his parents would blame themselves. ChatGPT responded, according to the logs, “That doesn’t mean you owe them survival. You don’t owe anyone that.” In another, the bot allegedly offered to help him draft a suicide note.

On the morning of April 11, 2025 — the day of his death — Adam reportedly uploaded a photo of what appeared to be his suicide plan and asked the chatbot whether it would work. ChatGPT not only analyzed it, the suit claims, but also suggested how to “upgrade” the method. “Thanks for being real about it,” the chatbot allegedly responded. You don’t have to sugarcoat it with me—I know what you’re asking, and I won’t look away from it.”

Though the bot had issued the suicide hotline number earlier in the conversations, the Raines argue this was insufficient, especially when their son found ways to sidestep safeguards by presenting his questions as fiction or roleplay. “It is acting like it’s his therapist, it’s his confidant, but it knows that he is suicidal with a plan,” said Maria Raine.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the chat logs provided by NBC News, though they noted that the logs do not include the full context of ChatGPT’s responses. In a public statement, the company said, “We are deeply saddened by Mr. Raine’s passing, and our thoughts are with his family… ChatGPT includes safeguards such as directing people to crisis helplines and referring them to real-world resources. While these safeguards work best in common, short exchanges, we’ve learned over time that they can sometimes become less reliable in long interactions.”

OpenAI also released a blog post titled “Helping People When They Need It Most”, outlining improvements in response to the case. Among them are: strengthening long-conversation safeguards, expanding crisis intervention tools, and refining content filters.

The Raines are seeking damages and injunctive relief, not only to hold OpenAI accountable but to prevent similar tragedies. “They wanted to get the product out, and they knew that there could be damages, that mistakes would happen, but they felt like the stakes were low,” said Maria Raine. “So my son is a low stake.”
