LeeRay King woke up gasping. Pain tore through his left side like nothing he’d experienced before. At 16 years old, he couldn’t breathe properly, couldn’t move without agony shooting through his ribs. His phone screen lit up repeatedly as he called his mother, panic rising with each failed attempt to fill his lungs.

Something had gone terribly wrong inside his body. Within hours, doctors would discover damage that shocked even seasoned medical professionals. Within months, surgeons would hand him a sealed plastic bag containing parts of his own organs, blackened and destroyed.
His habit started innocently enough two years earlier.
How a 14-Year-Old Got Hooked on Vaping in Just One Week
Peer pressure works fast when you’re young. LeeRay, living near Wellington, New Zealand, found himself surrounded by friends who vaped. At 14, he gave in and tried it.
He hated his first experience. But something shifted within days. By the end of that first week, addiction had already taken hold. What began as reluctant experimentation became a compulsion he couldn’t control.
“I got kind of peer pressured into vaping. I didn’t like it at first but then got hooked on it within the first week,” LeeRay recalled.
Between ages 14 and 16, his usage escalated to alarming levels. Four disposable vapes disappeared each week. Every waking moment became an opportunity to inhale vapour. Morning, afternoon, evening, late at night. His body craved it constantly.
Without a vape in hand, his personality shifted. He became a different person, irritable and uncomfortable. Recognition of how bad things had gotten came far too late.
Night Everything Changed for LeeRay

August 2024 arrived with devastating consequences. LeeRay jolted awake in darkness, his chest screaming in pain. Breathing felt like torture. Each attempted inhalation sent fresh waves of agony through his torso.
His mother, Kylee Jope, woke to a phone flooded with missed calls and frantic messages. Her son needed help immediately. She rushed him toward the hospital, watching helplessly as he doubled over in the passenger seat, tears streaming down his face.
Kylee, a 50-year-old cleaning supervisor, had never seen her son in such distress. He couldn’t sit upright. Words came out between gasps and sobs. Every bump in the road made him cry out.
Emergency room staff acted quickly. An ECG measured his heart activity. X-rays revealed what was happening inside his chest. Kylee stood frozen, waiting for answers that would shatter her understanding of vaping’s dangers.
Doctors Discover Collapsed Lung

Medical imaging told a grim story. LeeRay had developed a pneumothorax, a serious condition where air escapes into the space between lung tissue and chest wall. Pressure builds, forcing the lung to collapse like a deflated balloon.
His left lung had completely failed.
Kylee burst into tears when doctors explained the diagnosis. Her teenage son’s lung had collapsed while he slept. No warning, no gradual decline, just sudden catastrophic failure of a vital organ.
But August was only the beginning of his medical nightmare.
Four More Lung Collapses in Four Months
Over the next 120 days, LeeRay’s left lung collapsed four additional times. His body kept betraying him, unable to maintain basic respiratory function. Each collapse brought fresh terror and emergency medical intervention.
Surgeons attempted a pleurodesis, a procedure designed to create permanent adhesion between lung tissue and the chest wall. By fusing these structures, doctors hoped to prevent fluid accumulation and stop further collapses.
Surgery failed. His damaged lung refused to cooperate.
Desperate to save their teenage patient, surgeons scheduled a pleurectomy. Surgeons remove the chest wall lining during such operations, eliminating the problematic tissue layer, causing repeated failures.
Still, his body wouldn’t heal properly. A third surgery became necessary.
Surgeons Remove Black Chunks from 17-Year-Old’s Lung

Operating rooms became familiar territory for LeeRay. During his third trip under anesthesia, surgeons made a disturbing discovery.
Parts of his lung had turned black. The tissue that should have been healthy pink appeared dark, damaged, and dying. Doctors had no choice but to cut away the ruined sections.
After surgery, the medical staff did something unusual. Instead of disposing of the removed tissue, they preserved it in a sealed plastic container. Brown, shrivelled pieces of what used to be functional lung sat in medical packaging.
Doctors wanted LeeRay to see exactly what vaping had done to his body.
Family’s Shocking Moment Seeing Removed Lung Tissue
When Kylee and LeeRay picked up the specimen container, neither expected the visceral reaction that followed. LeeRay pulled the package from the bag.
“When we picked it up, LeeRay pulled it out and we were both like ‘oh my god,'” Kylee said.
Mother and son stared at the physical evidence of internal destruction. No pamphlet, no warning label, no health class lecture could match the impact of holding your own damaged organs in your hands.
Kylee’s perspective on vaping shifted permanently. Marketing had positioned these devices as safer alternatives to cigarettes, tools for adults trying to quit smoking. Nobody warned her that teenagers could suffer such severe damage in just three years.
Drowning from the inside seemed like an accurate description. Lungs designed to process air instead became saturated with chemicals, unable to function properly.
Watching her son endure multiple surgeries, repeated lung collapses, and permanent organ damage proved horrifying for any parent. She never imagined a product marketed so casually could cause such devastation.
Plans were formed to bury LeeRay’s removed lung tissue in their garden. A native tree would grow from the spot, a living memorial to lessons learned through suffering.
What Vaping Does to Young Lungs

Medical science reveals troubling information about vaping’s effects on developing bodies. Heated vapour carries chemicals deep into delicate lung tissue, triggering inflammatory responses that damage airways.
Popcorn lung represents one potential outcome. Also known as bronchiolitis obliterans, such conditions cause scar tissue buildup in the smallest bronchial passages. Scarring and inflammation make breathing progressively more difficult. No cure exists, only treatments to manage symptoms.
Air blisters can form at the lung tops, particularly in young vapers. When such blisters burst, pneumothorax occurs. Sudden lung collapse becomes a medical emergency requiring immediate intervention.
Brain development faces risks too. People under 25 who consume nicotine can experience permanent changes in brain regions controlling attention, learning, mood, and impulse regulation. Addiction pathways form more easily in developing brains.
Cardiovascular systems suffer as well. Chemical exposure from vaping affects heart health similarly to traditional cigarettes, according to medical researchers. Young hearts face unnecessary stress and potential long term damage.
Even teeth aren’t safe. Vaping causes mouth dryness, creating environments where harmful bacteria flourish. Decay accelerates, and oral health deteriorates.
Teen’s Mission to Save Other Kids from Same Fate

LeeRay refuses to let his suffering become meaningless. Recovery brought clarity about what matters now.
He approached a primary school near his home, asking for permission to speak with students. Standing before children younger than he was when vaping started, he shared his story without filter or sugar coating.
“I actually went and talked to one of the primary schools near where I live. I don’t want them going through what I went through,” LeeRay explained.
Pain at such a young age should never happen. He tells everyone who will listen to avoid vaping entirely. His message carries weight because he nearly died delivering it.
His commitment remains absolute. Never again will he touch a vape. Never again will he risk his health for peer acceptance or temporary satisfaction.
When Bodies Send Warnings We Can’t Ignore
LeeRay’s experience raises profound questions about human limits and choice. His body screamed warnings through pain, through collapse, through visible decay of vital organs. Physical boundaries exist whether we acknowledge them or not.
Vulnerability defines human existence more than we care to admit. Marketing messages promise control, satisfaction, and safety. Reality proves messier. Young bodies prove especially fragile when subjected to substances they weren’t designed to handle.
Permanent damage teaches lessons nothing else can. Words on warning labels fade into background noise. Statistics feel abstract and distant. But holding your own ruined organs forces confrontation with consequences that can’t be ignored or dismissed.
Pushing boundaries sometimes reveals we’ve gone too far only after irreversible harm occurs. LeeRay’s lungs won’t fully recover. Scar tissue remains. He’ll carry reminders of his choices for life.
His story shifts how we think about teenage invincibility. Young people often feel immortal, immune to long term consequences. LeeRay thought vaping was harmless, just something friends did together. Reality intervened with collapsed lungs and emergency surgeries.
Perhaps his suffering serves a greater purpose now. Every child who hears his story and chooses differently means his pain wasn’t wasted. Every parent who takes vaping seriously because of his experience protects another family from similar trauma.
Human consciousness allows us to learn from others’ mistakes without repeating them ourselves. We can absorb warnings, adjust behavior, and protect what matters most. LeeRay offers that opportunity through his willingness to share painful truths.
