Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the meat of mature coconuts. It was widely used in the 1950’s as a standard oil, but health organizations claimed it to be bad for overall health and switched everyone over to typical vegetable oil.

As far as health concerns go, it is one of the better saturated fats for you to consume, if you’re going to consume it anyways. However, keep in mind that coconut oil itself is still a very concentrated form of saturated fat – which does raise LDL cholesterol. Therefore, keeping the ingestion of coconut oil to a minimum along with any and all other oils is highly recommended.

Regardless of the saturated fat content, coconut oil has become very popular recently in the conscious health movement for it’s overwhelming number of health benefits, even beyond that in the culinary sense. Many people absolutely love and support the use of this oil over almost every other type of oil, and today it is still regarded as one of the healthiest oils to use.

Some of it’s main uses include: Hair and skin moisturizer, Oil pulling, Toothpaste, makeup remover, Coffee creamer, Soothe bug bites and as a Natural deodorant!

It’s very easy to create a wide range of different healthy products with it. If you combine a portion of coconut oil, baking soda and just a drop or 2 of peppermint oil, you have an amazing toothpaste!

Combining coconut oil with different aromatic essential oils can easily create different types of hand and body lotion. Coconut oil is ridiculously hydrating, and so if you are someone who has particularly dry feet or skin anywhere, putting some coconut oil on the dry spot and leaving it on overnight while you sleep is one of the best ways of super-hydrating your skin rather quickly.

It’s also a great natural lubricant, for massages or otherwise, and the added bonus that it is free of chemicals makes it an excellent choice for this purpose.
